Since May 2024, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) will help cover dental costs for people who earn under $90,000 a year and don’t have dental insurance. This program is designed to make dental care more budget friendly for Canadians who need it the most.
Here’s How the CDCP Dental Benefit Works
- No co-payment: If your family’s adjusted annual income is under $70,000, you’ll only need to pay the difference between what the CDCP covers and the BC fee guide.
- 40% co-payment: If your income is between $70,000 and $79,999, you’ll need to cover 40% of your dental costs.
- 60% co-payment: If your family’s income is between $80,000 and $89,999, than you to pay 60% of your dental treatment cost.
It’s important to know that not all dental services will be covered by the CDCP. Be sure to ask about the cost of any treatment you’re considering before starting. For full details, you can check out the official website at canada.ca/dental.

FAQ
What Dental Treatments Are Covered Under CDCP at Mahogany Dental Wellness?

- Preventive care
- Diagnostic services
- Restorative treatments
- Endodontic procedures
- Prosthodontic services
- Periodontal care

Some treatments might require preauthorization. This means that before you receive certain services, we’ll need approval based on your oral health and any medical conditions you might have. At Mahogany Dental Wellness, we’re here to guide you through this process and ensure you get the care you need.
What Does the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Cover?
The Canada’s Dental Care Plan helps with some of your dental costs, but it doesn’t cover everything. You may still need to pay for some services that aren’t included. Depending on your family’s income, here’s what you might need to pay:
- Family income under $70,000: You will only need to pay the difference between CDCP coverage and the BC charge guide.
- Family income between $70,000 and $79,999: You’ll pay 40% of the dental costs.

How Do I Apply for CDCP?
To apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), you need to submit your application through Health Canada. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive a welcome package from Sun Life within about three months. This package will include details about your coverage, your benefit start date, and your membership card.
At Mahogany Dental Wellness, we can help you with the application process and any questions you have about using your CDCP benefits for your dental care.
How Do I Know If I’m Eligible?
To find out if you qualify for the CDCP, check the Health Canada website.
When Can I Apply?
Right now, the CDCP is open to Canadian residents who are:
- Over 65 years old
- Under 18 years old
- Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate
Other residents will be eligible starting in 2025.
Will I Lose My Dental Coverage at Work When the CDCP Launches?
It’s a great question! Right now, two-thirds of Canadians have dental benefits through their job or another group plan. These plans let you choose your dentist and care. The CDCP is mainly for people who don’t have any benefits, but it shouldn’t replace the coverage you already have.
When Can I Start Using My CDCP Benefits?
Once you apply through Health Canada and are approved, your details will be sent to Sun Life, who will get you enrolled in the CDCP. Sun Life will send you information on when your coverage starts and your member card. The start date for accessing care will depend on when you’re enrolled.
Should I Cancel My Private Insurance?
The CDCP isn’t meant to replace your current private or workplace dental insurance. It’s for Canadians who don’t have any dental benefits. If you already have Canadian dental insurance, it’s a good idea not to cancel it just yet. Keep your current coverage until you know exactly how the CDCP works.
Am I Eligible for the CDCP if I Already Have Coverage from Provincial Government Programs?
Yes! If you already have coverage from provincial government programs, you can still apply for the CDCP. Both programs will coordinate benefits, so you won’t have overlapping coverage, and you’ll get the most out of your dental care. The federal government is working with provinces to figure out how this will work, and more details will be available in May 2024.
How Can I Access the CDCP?
The CDCP is being rolled out in phases. Here’s the schedule:
- December 2023: Ages 87 and older
- January 2024: Ages 77 to 86
- February 2024: Ages 72 to 76
- March 2024: Ages 70 to 71
Seniors 65 and older will be able to apply online in May 2024 for the Canadian Dental Plan for Seniors, and those with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate or children under 18 can apply online starting in June 2024. All other Canadians are eligible in 2025.
